Shift

2018, EXHIBITION

A partner work to Stasis in which raw wood was collected from Hestercombe’s grounds and transformed through the repetitive act of sanding and French polishing. The attention, time and process invested in this exercise raises the status of logs destined for fire-wood to that of a display somewhere between nature and sculpture.  The title suggests this transformation as well as displacement, a shift in status – treating firewood to the same care a fine piece of domestic furniture would have been shown.

The work draws together interests in trees and ecology, materials, in craft, industry and site through translation and transformation.
