Bonsais

Bonsai, Bound_Unbound, 2018 (with Breathing Space in the background)

Materiality: Provisional States Hestercombe Gallery

Nature crafted, its value diminished through death, raised again through re-attention and the binding of its limbs in embroidery thread. Unceremoniously removed from its pot on its death this bonsai is both bound and unbound. Interests in site are revealed further by drawings created entirely through the blowing of ink across paper, which serve as a unique example of how humans interact with the environment. The dark expressive marks born from the dark recesses of our corporeal body echo the tree roots and branches in the bonsais they sit alongside.
