Pegboard and cotton yarn. A series of drawings with yarn – working on repetition and pattern. The pegboard is worked until it is almost ‘bound’ with interconnecting lines of colour.

An ongoing series. The obsessive sewing of pegboard with coloured yarn is made in relation to the intimate White Study pieces and continues ideas on internal landscapes and the binding of sites and material.  The larger body of work can be drawings of internal states of mind as well as shapes and mass that can be read as topographical details. The activity is labour intensive and the scale of the larger pieces (3’ x 3’) subverts the notion of needlecraft and embroidery as gentle, quiet craft pursuits, aping Jackson Pollock’s dynamic drip paintings in yarn.  Artists often talk about drawing with wire or thread to create a linear image, and here I have made drawings with yarn on pegboard. The repeated action involved with making these works took on an almost meditative quality. They convey the physical action involved in the making rather than the quietness often associated with embroidery. The labour involved lends value to otherwise humble materials.
