Carpet Bed

2012

Project/commission

A work made for Waddeson Manor, (National Trust), Aylesbury

20,000 alpine plants grown at Kernock nurseries and 6 months later laid out in just one day.
Working from the textile archive and closely with the then Curator of Textiles Rachel Boak I studied and fell for the collection of exquisite, impossibly expensive lace fragments the history of lace making.

The design for the carpet bed on the parterre is based on C17th Chinoiserie lace in Waddesdon’s textile archive. This is one of two interventions at Waddesdon Manor that used an aspect of the collection to make a link between the public and private, personal and psychological. The work brings to the fore elements of Alice Rothschild’s personal feminine collections and voice within the house.
